Directions: From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left. From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right. Sunday, at 8:30am at the Franklin Mountain’s Upper Sunset Trail park at the end of park by the pavillion for a 2-3 mile hike. Read below for details and instructions. NOTE: you need to arrive right at 8:00am to get through gate and find parking. Think 7:45am El Paso. As there will be line to get in park. Special Guests: Nancy Casas and Above Ground Drone Works Total Time is from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Hiking time about 2 hours. Hope to see you there A hike to Upper Sunset and the Tom Mays Trail. This easy to moderate hike takes you along a low ridgeline wet of the Tom Mays Park Access road. While there are some short steep inclines and declines, you are rewarded with great views of the valley. The observant hiker will also spot a variety of fossils in our limestone, but remember to leave them where you find them for other visitors to enjoy. Total distance is about 3 miles. Bring: water (2-3 liters) , snacks, hiking boots/shoes, sun protection, and comfortable clothing. Optional: binoculars, hiking stick, gloves, camera, and a map. Meeting location: The end loop in the Tom Mays Unit. When you enter Tom Mays, stop by the Visitor Center and let the Ranger on duty know you are part of the hike. Continue down the road until it ends in a loop and find a parking spot. Fee: $5 for adults 13 years old and up; $0 for Texas State Park Pass holders and children 12 and under.
