The Nutcracker Ballet, based on a German fairy tale, is one of the most famous ballets in the world. It’s Christmas Eve, and Herr Von Stahlbaum and his wife are preparing for their annual Christmas party. Their children, Clara and Fritz, wait anxiously for family and friends to arrive.

One of the guests is a mysterious man, dressed in black. He is Drosselmeyer, Clara’s godfather—a toymaker and inventor who entertains the guests and delights the children with his life-sized mechanical toys.

Drosselmeyer’s special gift to Clara is a beautiful Nutcracker. Clara’s brother Fritz becomes jealous of her gift and, as he struggles to take the Nutcracker from her, it is broken. Drosselmeyer quickly repairs it, the party ends, and the guests leave. Clara’s parents put the toy Nutcracker away under the Christmas tree. Late that night, Clara sneaks back into the living room and falls asleep under the Christmas tree, the Nutcracker in her arms. As the grandfather clock strikes twelve, she awakens to a frightening scene. Magically, the tree begins to grow, and an army of mice, led by the wicked Mouse King, invades the quiet home. Clara’s gallant Nutcracker comes to life and leads a troop of toy soldiers in a battle against the mice. Clara helps him by distracting the Mouse King. The Nutcracker overcomes the stunned Mouse King and claims victory.

Then, before her very eyes, Clara’s Nutcracker turns into a handsome prince and takes her on a magical journey, through swirling snowflakes, to an Enchanted Land. Here they are surrounded by angels and greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and exotic dancers from faraway lands.
